Torment - Lauren Kate

Synopsis: Hell on earth. That’s what it’s like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel. It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts - immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students -Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans.

At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. He’s hiding something - something dangerous. What if Daniel’s version of the past isn’t actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else? The second novel in the addictive FALLEN series . . . where love never dies.

Review: Oh I so wanted this book to be better than what it was! It wasn’t bad. I read right through it and there were parts of it I really enjoyed. But there were other parts I found just confusing or frustrating and I had such high expectations!

So some of the things I guess that frustrated me:

  • Luce. You were told to stay put so you would be safe. You were told this more times than I care to think about in this book, but each time you stray and pretty much try to get yourself killed. *sigh* Maybe if this happened just the one time, it would have been okay. But it like happened 4 or 5 times.. maybe more if I was pedantic. It just got tired in the end.
  • Daniel and Luce. Oh I wanted this couple to be amazing. Instead they spend every one of their visits fighting with each other and then Luce (after spending reincarnated life after life being united with Daniel) decides that maybe she doesn’t want to be with Daniel after all? Eh.
  • Cam! Where was he? I thought this was meant to be a love triangle between Luce - Daniel - Cam. Cam was in this book like 4 times in total and there was nothing there. Instead a 3rd guy - Miles, a nephalim kid is bought into the book and it’s now a… love square?
  • The end. I won’t spoil it, but I’m sorry… left me totally confused. Why? She didn’t explain anything.

I am REALLY hoping that the next book explains itself better. I want to like this series. lol And I did like Fallen for what it’s worth… I liked Fallen a lot. But this sequel just left me closing the book at the end not feeling very inspired.

I am scoring it 3/5 flowers. Yes, there was a LOT I didn’t like about this book, but at the same time, there were other things I did enjoy such Miles’ character (even if he is now a part of the square!).. I thought he was quite charming and sweet. I also like Arianne’s character and was glad she came back. I am rating it a 3 in the hopes the next book will explain a lot of things I missed in this book. If I worked in halves it would be a 2 1/2.

Rating: 3 out of 5
