Unraveling - Elizabeth Norris

Synopsis: Two days before the start of her junior year, seventeen-year-old Janelle Tenner is hit by a pickup truck and killed-as in blinding light, scenes of her life flashing before her, and then nothing. Except the next thing she knows, she’s opening her eyes to find Ben Michaels, a loner from her high school whom Janelle has never talked to, leaning over her. And even though it isn’t possible, she knows-with every fiber of her being-that Ben has somehow brought her back to life.

But her revival, and Ben’s possible role in it, is only the first of the puzzles that Janelle must solve. While snooping in her FBI agent father’s files for clues about her accident, she uncovers a clock that seems to be counting down to something-but to what? And when someone close to Janelle is killed, she can no longer deny what’s right in front of her: Everything that’s happened-the accident, the murder, the countdown clock, Ben’s sudden appearance in her life-points to the end of life as she knows it. And as the clock ticks down, she realizes that if she wants to put a stop to the end of the world, she’s going to need to uncover Ben’s secrets-and keep from falling in love with him in the process.

Review: Everything is running fairly smooth in Janelle’s life until she dies and is bought back to life by Ben Michaels. Sure, her family is a little dysfunctional. Her father works for the FBI and is a workaholic, and her mother suffers from bi-polar, but asides from that, everything else is relatively normal until that point. And then things get strange.

How did Ben bring her back? She knows she was dead. Her spine was broken. And yet, he heals her on the spot. She has so many questions about what happened, and questions about the truck driver who hit her and killed her. After rifling through her fathers FBI files, Janelle finds some clues, but really this just opens a whole ‘nother can of worms.

She employs the help of her friend Alex to see if they can get to the bottom of what happened. The more they dig, the more they realise how this is linked with a series of unexplained deaths… peoples skin and bones melted from radiation poisoning. The key to all of this, and the only person who can help Janelle with answers: Ben Michaels.

Together, they have less than a few weeks to get to the bottom of it all… before the world ends.

Honestly, this is a fantastic edge-of-your-seat kind of story. And I had no idea what this book was really all about before I started reading it, and the more involved we got, the more I loved it. It pulls you in, and before you know it, about three quarters of the way in BAM twist in the story! I didn’t see it coming, but when it happened, I loved it.

I absolutely loved Ben Michael’s mysterious ways. He’s set out to be a bad boy, but really is just perfect. Janelle and Ben together works out amazing, and I really enjoyed their chemistry.

If you enjoy thrillers, mysteries, sci-fi and a little bit of romance, this is your book. With references to the X-Files and Veronica Mars, this is a YA book with a difference!
