Soulstice (The Devouring #2) - Simon Holt

Synopsis: The terrifying, nail-biting, and grossly intriguing sequel toThe Devouring.

It’s been six months since Reggie first discovered and fought against the Vours, malicious and demonic beings that inhabit human bodies on the eve of the Winter Solstice.

The Vours still haunt Reggie, but only in her dreams-until one night, when an unexpected visitor turns her nightmares into reality.

The battle against evil continues in Soulstice, the second book in the thrilling The Devouring series, which School Library Journal called, “Comparable to books by R. L. Stine and Stephen King….A must-have for horror fans.”

Review: I was just left on the biggest cliffhanger!

This book was just as solid as the first book (The Devouring) in this series. The story starts back 6 months after where The Devouring left off, with the impending Summer Solstice. Due to Reggie’s new abilities the Voirs have decided to break the rules and can now enter a person on the Summer Soulstice also. Reggie and her friend Aaron are back to try and stop them.

We don’t see too much of Henry in this book - it focuses more on Reggie herself and also we see the return of Quinn who features fairly heavily in the story as well.

More fearscapes to try and conquer, just as entertaining as the first book. It’s amazing to me how much both of the books I’ve read in this series play like movies. It’s almost like each chapter could be played out like a scene. It’s such a smooth read!

I had some inkling of what was going to happen at the end (since I am crafty like that, and I like to think ahead at the possibilities), however the last two or three pages just completely THREW me… I didn’t see it coming. And I am now horrified and shocked and am so so relieved that I was already able to check out the third book (Fearscape) from my library so I can get started tonight.

I can’t imagine how painful that would have been to those people who read this book upon release having to wait the next year for the third book to be released!

Absolutely fantastic book - I cannot recommend both The Devouring and Soulstice enough, especially this coming Halloween!

Rating: 5 out of 5
