The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight - Jennifer E Smith

Synopsis: Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?

Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan’s life. She’s stuck at JFK, late to her father’s second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon to be step-mother that Hadley’s never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport’s cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he’s British, and he’s in seat 18C. Hadley’s in 18A.

Twists of fate and quirks of timing play out in this thoughtful novel about family connections, second chances and first loves. Set over a 24-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver’s story will make you believe that true love finds you when you’re least expecting it.

Review: This story is about a girl named Hadley, who through a series of events ends up being late for her flight to England, and along the way meets a boy named Oliver. This is the story of their chance meeting over 24 hours and their relationship.

It’s such a cute read!! I think going into this book initially I was fearful of the whole instalove situation popping up, as this book is set over a 24 hour period. And I hate instalove (Just add water). But readers - I assure you it’s really not like that. It’s written in a really adorable way, and whilst I would say that the story line was predictable, I enjoyed it emensely.

One thing I didn’t initially like at the beginning of the book was that there was no protagonist. It was written in a third person style, which I didn’t really love - I really like a book written in 1st person with a main protagonist. It generally feels more personal. However 4 chapters in, and I didn’t even notice it anymore, and in actual fact I really got into the story from this point on also.

Hadley was really cute. She is a typical teenager, but she’s dealing with a lot of anger towards both of her parents who have been divorced, and her dad is remarrying (the reason she’s going to London). She was absolutely dreading the flight but her chance meeting with Oliver seems to make everything a little bit better.

And Oliver sounds hot. Any time there’s a boy with an English accent in books I seem to instinctly gravitate towards them! haha

Whilst the story takes place on a flight, it turns out to be only a minor part of the story itself. They go their seperate ways after the flight, and the rest of the story focuses mostly on Hadley’s fathers wedding and how she is coping with all of the mixed emotions she is feeling.

Overall, it was a quick enjoyable read. It breaks up a lot of the heavier YA reads currently out at the moment.

Rating: 4 out of 5

Trailers: There are currently two trailers, one from the perspective of Hadley and one from Olivers perspective! Too cute. :)

Thanks for talking about the insta love because I hate it too. That’s what I wanted to know about in this book; it was what I was worried about but it makes me feel better knowing that “it works”. By the way, I love the header and the buttons for “follow me” and your signature! :)

Yes the instalove thing was important to me too, so I was happily surprised with this book!

And thank you!! I like to change the look and feel every now and then, but I’m enjoying this look. :)

  • I had the same initial feeling about the protagonist (or lack of) but once I got into the book I forgot all about that problem!

Also, I had never seen the trailers :) So thanks! I love watching the trailers (AFTER I’ve read - so I can build my own picture first.)

I’m glad I am not the only one!! I love my protagonists! But I got over it. lol

No worries at all, I didn’t see the trailers until after I read the book either, but I think there are so many good trailers these days that I am going to be definitely incorporating them moreso into my site!
