Stacking the Shelves #83

Hi everyone! This week’s Stacking the Shelves is what Melissa and I have added to our bookshelves over the past two weeks :) Stacking the Shelves is bought to you by Tynga from Tynga’s Reviews. Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

In Mel’s mailbox:

Batman Volume 4: Zero Year - Secret City - Scott Snyder

I bought this copy! I have read Volumes 1 and Volumes 2 of Batman, and I have number 3 at home, but I was in the comic store today and Volume 4 is now out, so I bought it in anticipation to read.

The second arc of BATMAN: ZERO YEAR is collected as the New 52 origin of The Dark Knight delves into Bruce Wayne’s past with the Red Hood Gang and his run-ins with aspiring District Attorney Harvey Dent! You won’t want to miss the moment that Bruce becomes Batman!

This new hardcover collects BATMAN #21-24.

Harley Quinn #7 - Amanda Conner

I bought this copy. I’ve been collecting Harley Quinn issues each month, and this is the last issue before they bundle all 1-7 of the first issues up into a volume or trade paperback. I don’t often buy single issues of comics, except for a few ones that I really love - Harley being one of them!

Welcome to Ladies’ Night, where Harley gets her butt kicked by Big Bertha Bensonhurts at the roller derby, starts a massive bar fight and teams up with Poison Ivy to find out who hired all those pesky assassins!

Adventures of Superman #40 & #41

I bought this today also. I don’t usually love Superman titles all that much (I generally find him boring), but these issues were cool because Joker (From Batman fame), takes a trip to Metropolis, and it’s two of the best issues I have ever seen Superman interacting in.

“The Sound of One Hand Clapping” two part story! The Joker’s in town…and he wants to meet Superman! As the Joker threatens to detonate hundreds of bombs scattered all over Metropolis, Superman calmly explains why the Joker won’t do it.

Find out what happens next in this one-of-a-kind story from “Chronicle” writer Max Landis and legendary artist Jock!

In Kristy’s mailbox:

In the Shadows - Kiersten White and Jim Di Bartolo

I know, I have already told you about copies of this book I have arrived in my mailbox, but this is special! I won this competition held by Kiersten White, and it is custom painted by Jim Di Bartolo! I can’t believe how lucky I am to have won this copy!!! For a picture of the book itself, see my Twitter pic.

From the remarkable imagination of acclaimed artist Jim Di Bartolo and the exquisite pen of bestselling author Kiersten White comes a spellbinding story of love, mystery, and dark conspiracy, told in an alternating narrative of words and pictures.

Cora and Minnie are sisters living in a small, stifling town where strange and mysterious things occur. Their mother runs the local boarding house. Their father is gone. The woman up the hill may or may not be a witch.

Thomas and Charles are brothers who’ve been exiled to the boarding house so Thomas can tame his ways and Charles can fight an illness that is killing him with increasing speed. Their family history is one of sorrow and guilt. They think they can escape from it . . . but they can’t.

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles #1) - Marissa Meyer

A purchase during those amazing book sales :)

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) - Marissa Meyer

I purchased this to go with the previous The Lunar Chronicles!

In this third book in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl imprisoned on a satellite since childhood who’s only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue of Cress goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing prevent her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only hope the world has.

Snow like Ashes (Snow Like Ashes #1) - Sara Raasch

I got this eARC thanks to HarperTeen (via Edelweiss)

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

Crashland (Twinmaker #2) - Sean Williams

I also got this eARC thanks to HarperTeen (via Edelweiss)

The Matrix meets the Uglies series in this science fiction thriller, the second in the Twinmaker trilogy by Sean Williams.

Where is Q?

Clair and Jesse have barely been reunited when the world is plunged into its biggest crisis since the Water Wars. The d-mat network is broken. The world has ground to a halt. People are trapped, injured, dying. It’s the end of the world as Clair knows it—and it’s partly her fault.

“The girl who killed d-mat” is enlisted to track down her missing friend Q—the rogue AI who repeatedly saved Clair’s life. Q is the key to fixing the system, but she isn’t responding to calls for help, and even if she did…can she be trusted?

Targeted by dupes, abandoned by her friends, caught in a web of lies that strike at the very essence of who she is, Clair finds powerful allies in RADICAL, secretive activists who are the polar opposite of anti-d-mat terrorist group WHOLE. However, if she helps them find Q, will she be inadvertently trapping her friend in a life of servitude—or worse, sending her to an early death by erasure?

Caught between pro- and anti-d-mat philosophies, in a world on the brink of all-out war, Clair must decide where she stands—and who she stands with, at the end.
