Insurgent (Divergent #2) - Veronica Roth

Synopsis: One choice can transform you-or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves-and herself-while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris’s initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable-and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

Review: My most anticipated sequel of 2012! The first 100 pages or so were a little disappointing, and this could be a combination of my trip to America/reading slump/boring start I think. I struggled to get through it but pushed on. I am glad I did because Insurgent ended up being really quite good. I just needed to push through the start. Initially I had to try and remember the characters since it was over a year ago that I read Divergent, but this came back to me pretty quickly!

Insurgent follows where Divergent left us (one of the biggest cliffhangers of 2011!). It’s hard to say too much about the plot of the story line itself without giving too much away, however Tris is left shellshocked after both her parents were killed. We see a different side to Tris in this book, and personally one that I didn’t love as much as Divergent. She still kicks ass, but she certainly has some moments in this book that come across as being whiny and perhaps a little emo. Tobias (Four) also goes through his own personal journey in this book too and we see a cold and distant version of him throughout too. Interested to see where this is going in the third book in this trilogy!

Essentailly, Erudite are trying to take down the other factions in Insurgent. They are interested in finding a way to take control over the Divergent members of the factions as well as the normal serums do not work, so Janine Matthews is working on a new type of serum to ensure the Divergent won’t stop Erudite from taking over.

Meanwhile, Dauntless and the Factionless are working on a counterplan to try and stop Erudite.

SO much backstabbing. From places you do not expect it to come from! SO many deaths, of people you wouldn’t think Roth would kill off. I spent the last half of the book with my mouth open a bit in shock.

Hard to say much more without spoilers, and so I am going to just say that if you enjoyed Divergent, you need to read Insurgent! In typical Divergent style, Insurgent leaves us on a pretty major cliffhanger. *sigh* Let the wait begin for the next book!!

Gorgeous cover. I just read the synopsis and I decided that this must be a good story. The strong female lead is awesome. The plot is action packed and the romance is fantastic. You did a great review Melissa.
