Synopsis: Before Peter Pan belonged to Wendy, he belonged to the girl with the crow feather in her hair. . . .

Fifteen-year-old Tiger Lily doesn’t believe in love stories or happy endings. Then she meets the alluring teenage Peter Pan in the forbidden woods of Neverland and immediately falls under his spell.

Peter is unlike anyone she’s ever known. Impetuous and brave, he both scares and enthralls her. As the leader of the Lost Boys, the most fearsome of Neverland’s inhabitants, Peter is an unthinkable match for Tiger Lily. Soon, she is risking everything—her family, her future—to be with him. When she is faced with marriage to a terrible man in her own tribe, she must choose between the life she’s always known and running away to an uncertain future with Peter.

With enemies threatening to tear them apart, the lovers seem doomed. But it’s the arrival of Wendy Darling, an English girl who’s everything Tiger Lily is not, that leads Tiger Lily to discover that the most dangerous enemies can live inside even the most loyal and loving heart.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Peaches comes a magical and bewitching story of the romance between a fearless heroine and the boy who wouldn’t grow up.

Review: Tiger Lily tells the story of Neverland like you have read before… where good doesn’t always prevail and where love doesn’t always win. The writing is beautiful, filled with wonderful descriptions and heart-wrenching emotions. This story is about loneliness, hope, fear, loss, love, strength and heartbreak.

Tiger Lily is a strong, but lonely character. Living amongst tribe members who believe she is cursed, Tiger Lily has never been fully accepted, but yet she is fearless, smart and determined. She has come to accept her place within the tribe, taking pleasure in the smallest of things, but when she discovers a boy in the forest who shows her that she can belong, her life changes.

Tiger Lily is told from Tinkerbell’s point of view - and this is my absolute favourite thing about this book. I utterly enjoyed being in Tinkerbells head - this amazingly strong little faerie proved herself to be empathetic, endearing and filled with the same courage that she admires in Tiger Lily.

Through Tinkerbell, we are able to get to know multiple characters - Tiger Lily and Peter Pan included. I think the thing that I loved most about having this story told in Tinkerbells perspcecitve is her ability to love both Tiger Lily and Peter. She has always admired Tiger Lily, but as Tinkerbell falls in love with Peter, Peter falls in love with Tiger Lily. It was heartbreaking to watch her fall in love, and protect those she doesn’t feel can ever love her in return.

We also we got to learn a lot about “secondary” characters, such as The Lost Boys, Wendy, Tick Tock, Hook and Smee. All of these characters are complex and interesting, especially the villans of this storyline. Hook, who is a broken man who’s jealousy turns into unyielding desire to hurt Peter. And Smee, is another interesting character, who murders only those who he admires, but then mourns their deaths. Tick Tock was another extremely interesting character - I admired his strength, and I felt for him during his hardest of times (and where I felt that Tiger Lily really let him down).

All of the characters in Tiger Lily have strengths and weaknesses - and sometimes it is those weaknesses that lead to disastrous decisions, or inability to see what is happening around them.

The relationship between Tiger Lily and Peter Pan is so sweet. As Peter shows Tiger Lily that life is filled with adventures, promise and possibilities, an unlikely friendship develops into a love that cannot be forgotten. The interactions between these two damaged characters were so charming and honest.

Tiger Lily is a poignant story of first love, heartbreak and courage. The writing is beautiful, and the characters are interesting. It is an interesting twist of the fairytale - it is Tiger Lily’s (and really Tinkerbells) story, so the adventures of The Lost Boys is not a focus of the story - but if you want a wonderfully written re-telling, filled with emotion, strength, weakness, and true-love then this if for you. Tiger Lily is bittersweet - it shows what love truly means: it is both sad and beautiful.

Quotes:

“Let me tell you something straight off. This is a love story, but not like any you’ve heard. The boy and the girl are far from innocent. Dear lives are lost. And good doesn’t win.”

“Sometimes I think that maybe we are just stories. Like we may as well just be words on a page, because we’re only what we’ve done and what we are going to do.”

“She did not believe he could have really gone, because for her, to leave the person you loved was impossible.”

“You have to be careful who you meet. You can’t unmeet them.”

“I wanted to be there, having my face touched, defeating a heart like Peter’s, but the next best thing was seeing it for Tiger Lily.”

“Did you know I always thought you were braver than me? Did you ever guess that that was why I was so afraid? It wasn’t that I only loved some of you. But I wondered if you could ever love more than some of me.”

Beauty Queens - Libba Bray

Thanks to Allen & Unwin for this copy! I actually reviewed this book back in 2011 and loved this read so much! You can view my review of it here.

The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner.

What’s a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program - or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan - or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?

Welcome to the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Your tour guide? None other than Libba Bray, the hilarious, sensational, Printz Award-winning author of A Great and Terrible Beauty and Going Bovine. The result is a novel that will make you laugh, make you think, and make you never see beauty the same way again.

In both Mel & Kristy’s mailbox this week:

These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) - Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Thanks to Allen & Unwin for this read! I’ll be reading this for an upcoming blog tour!

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

In Kristy’s mailbox this week:

Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles #1) - Gena Showalter

I finally brought this book. I do have the ebook, but I haven’t read it yet. Hopefully now it will be on my physical bookshelf, I will get around to it sooner.

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies.

Through The Zombie Glass (White Rabbit Chronicles #2) - Gena Showalter

I purchased this one at the same time as Alice in Zombieland.

Inspired by the childhood classic Alice in Wonderland, this harrowing and romantic story features teen zombie slayer Alice Bell who has lost so much—family, friends, her home. After a strange new zombie attack, Alice fears she may be losing her mind as well. A terrible darkness blooms inside her, urging her to do wicked things. The whispers of the dead assault her ears and mirrors seem to come frighteningly to life. She’s never needed her team of zombie slayers more—including her boyfriend, Cole—than she does now. But as Cole strangely withdraws and the zombies gain new strength, Ali knows one false step may doom them all.

The Last Girl - Michael Adams

I also purchased this one as I am really looking forward to reading it.

The end of the world happened quickly. The sun still shone, there was no explosion - just a tsunami-sized wave of human thought drowning the world in telepathic noise as everyone’s inner-most secrets became audible. Everyone’s thoughts, that is, except sixteen-year-old Danby.

Everyone looked like bad actors in a poorly dubbed movie. Their expressions didn’t match their emotions and their lips didn’t sync with what they were saying. But they were all so loud.

God-he-looks-hot-Can’t-she’s-my-best-friend-How’d-she-lose-that-weight-No-don’t-you-dare-Oh-no-please-

The end of the world happens in the blink of an eye.

When The Snap sweeps the globe, everyone can instantly hear everything that everyone else is thinking. As secrets and lies are laid bare, suburbs and cities explode into insanity and violence. What might have been an evolutionary leap instead initiates the apocalypse.

Sixteen-year-old Danby Armstrong’s telepathy works very differently. She can tune into other people but they can’t tune into her. With only this slender defence, Danby must protect her little brother and reach the safety of her mother’s mountain retreat. But it’s 100 kilometres away and the highways are blocked by thousands of cars and surrounded by millions of people coming apart at the psychic seams.

Danby’s escape is made even more dangerous by another cataclysm that threatens humanity’s extinction. And her ability to survive this new world will be tested by a charismatic young man whose power to save lives may be worse than death itself.

The Transfer (Divergent, #0.1) - Veronica Roth

I got this as ebook for my “weekday” read (and I have just finished the series).

More Four! Fans of the Divergent series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth will be thrilled by “The Transfer,” the first of four new short stories told from Four’s perspective. Each brief story explores the world of the Divergent series through the eyes of the mysterious but charismatic Tobias Eaton, revealing previously unknown facets of his personality, backstory, and relationships.

Free Four: Tobias Tells the Story (Divergent, #1.5) - Veronica Roth

I also got this as ebook for the reasons as The transfer.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth retells a pivotal Divergent scene (chapter 13) from Tobias’s point of view. This thirteen-page scene reveals unknown facts and fascinating details about Four’s character, his past, his own initiation, and his thoughts about new Dauntless initiate Tris Prior.

Where the Stars Still Shine - Trish Doller

Thank you to Bloomsbury for this beautiful hardback copy.

Stolen as a child from her large and loving family, and on the run with her mom for more than ten years, Callie has only the barest idea of what normal life might be like. She’s never had a home, never gone to school, and has gotten most of her meals from laundromat vending machines. Her dreams are haunted by memories she’d like to forget completely. But when Callie’s mom is finally arrested for kidnapping her, and Callie’s real dad whisks her back to what would have been her life, in a small town in Florida, Callie must find a way to leave the past behind. She must learn to be part of a family. And she must believe that love-even with someone who seems an improbable choice-is more than just a possibility.

Trish Doller writes incredibly real teens, and this searing story of love, betrayal, and how not to lose your mind will resonate with readers who want their stories gritty and utterly true.

Feral Friday - Novellas & Short Stories

It’s Feral Friday! And we here at Book Nerd Reviews thought we would discuss a topic that really sends us feral.

This week, we’re talking about what we think of novellas, short stories & extras:

Kristy’s say:

I was always in the “meh” camp when it came to novellas and short stories - with a few exceptions such as those from the Wicked Lovely series. However, this year I must admit that I have come across some novellas that I have absolutely loved. The novellas from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas proved to give some background information that I felt was missing from the first book, and some a nice little connections between Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight. I will however say, that I do not like it when you must read a novella to understand some of the storyline, or if it is necessary to connect books together.

Finding Cinderella by Colleen Hoover is a perfect example of what I do like about novellas. It wasn’t necessary to read it to understand or complete the Hopeless storyline (as it was set after Hopeless and Losing Hope), and I especially liked the fact that novella was about secondary characters. This particular novella can be read as a standalone, and is a story in it’s own right, but knowing and loving the characters from Hopeless just made it that much better!

And then of course there is the upcoming novella Night of Cake and Puppets by Laini Taylor which is something that I am really looking forward to! But let’s be honest, I am biased, and I would love anything from Laini. But, once again, this is about secondary characters, and although this is set back in Daughter of Smoke and Bone, it is not necessary to understand the storyline - it’s just a nice little extra for Zuzana fans (like myself).

One thing I do not like about novellas or short stories is if they come out too long after the book/series they are for. Whilst I find them good for bridging books together mid-series, if they come out after a series (or standalone), I find that sometimes they come too late and I cannot connect to them - as they are often too short to drag me back into the world completely (unless of course I love that world and are eager to jump back into it in any way possible).

I think at the end of the day, I like novellas that aren’t necessary, but add to your experience of a book or series.

Melissa’s say:

Generally speaking I can live without novellas and short stories… their intention is that the reader of the novels won’t miss any of the critical storyline if they don’t read the novella but it gives fans something a little extra to help bridge or tie the novels together. That being said, books that I am a big fan of like the Legend series by Marie Lu and the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi are good examples of series where I did read novellas released for this series and really enjoyed them!

I think for a lot of us, there’s usually that painful wait of around a year between releases, and I don’t know about you guys but I tend to have a pretty bad memory and so by the time the next releases come out, I am usually a little bit foggy about the details of what happened in the last book, or some of the side characters. In my experience, I have found reading some of those novellas before moving on to the next book to be quite a good experience. It means I don’t have to waste time re-reading the previous novel (I can’t re-read books anyways), and I find it gives me enough of a refresh that I am back in the zone by the time I start the next novel!

For series I like, but don’t love though, I’ll be honest - I can live without them! lol

Review: City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments #3) – Cassandra Clare

Release Date: March 24th 2009
Published By: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Pages: 541
Goodreads: Add it to your reading list

Rating: 4 out of 5

Synopsis:

To save her mother’s life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters - never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City - whatever the cost?

Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the final installment of the New York Times bestselling trilogy The Mortal Instruments.

Review: This review contains spoilers for City of Bone and City of Ashes.

City of Glass picks up where City of Ashes finishes. To save her mother, Clary must go the home of the Shadowhunters, the City of Glass - the world that she has never been a part of, even though she was born a Shadowhunter. Jace is adamant that she cannot go to the Alicante, but Clary manages to get to the Shadowhunters capital city anyway. While here, she will learn things about the history of Shadowhunters, her own history, and the history of friends and family. Even thought Clary’s world that has already been turned upside down, what she discovers is life-changing, and her world is going to be turned inside out.

A showdown with Valentine is imminent – every Shadowhunter knows it, as do the Downworlders. If Valentine succeeds, both Shadowhunters and Downworlders will be brought to extinction, but can these eons-old enemies find a way to work together to stop him? And what are Jace and Clary willing to risk to ensure that Valentine does not use The Mortal Instruments?

I am going to classify City of Glass as the final instalment of a trilogy. I know that there are 3 more books after this one, however this book was originally a trilogy, and it is clear that this is where this story ends (another one will begin in City of Fallen Angels). I found some things in this final instalment rather predictable (I actually predicted them at the end of City of Ashes) but other things were thrown in to the storyline that kept it interesting. One of the things that I respect about Cassandra Clare is that she weaves every detail into the storyline – everything that happens, or said, is for a purpose – and even if it is not immediately understood, you will later see that there is significance to everything. The over-arching storyline is intricate, and every aspect of the story eventually weaves together in this maze of characters, history, connections, deception, love, mystery and fate.

City of Glass shows various perspectives, which I really enjoyed. Rather than mainly following Clary, we got to see more of other characters such as Jace, Simon, Alec and Isabelle. A lot of these “secondary” characters start to come into themselves and come closer to the limelight… which I am sure will required in the next 3 books. And another thing I was extremely grateful for was more Magnus in this instalment. I love Magnus, I always have (as I read The Infernal Devices first).

I will admit, that at the beginning I found Clary a little annoying. She is a strong female character, as she will fight for something she believes in or for those she loves, but sometimes (and quite often in this book), she just doesn’t think things through before acting. She puts a lot of things, and people, at risk with her impulsiveness. But, at the end of the day, no matter what situation she finds herself in (or puts herself in) she steps up and does everything she can to do what is right.

City of Glass if jammed packed full of action, twists, suspense, deception and romance (including forbidden). For all of those you who find the situation between Clary and Jace, ummm… disturbing, then prepare yourself - there are lots more awkward moments in City of Glass. But whether you are shipping for them or not, there is enough going on to keep you intrigued in the various aspects of these characters lives. Once again, I found that humour in this book nicely complemented all the tension, angst or destruction. I like the banter from a lot of the characters - Jace, Simon and Magnus are my favourites. But I think that the relationship between Jace and Alec is one of my favourites - although there are so many secrets between them, the way they support each other and honestly understand each other shows quality character building and realism.

You also get to find the answers too many questions left unanswered in City of Bones and City of Ashes. You will find that so many things are woven together to complete a very complex story which leads to the climax of finding out if Valentine’s determination is stronger than family, if right is stronger than wrong and if enemy’s can ever be friends - where people will be lost, secrets will be revealed and life and love will be found… but is it all too late?

Although I see this as a trilogy, and I can see where the next storyline will lead, I am very interested to see where Cassandra will take this multifaceted world of Shadowhunters, Downworlders and demons.

Quotes:

“I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there is life after that, I’ll love you then.”

“And I’m suppose to sit by while you date boys and fall in love with someone else, get married…?” His voice tightened. “And meanwhile, I’ll die a little bit more every day, watching.”

“I am a man” he told her, “and men do not consume pink beverages. Get thee gone woman, and bring me something brown.”

“Not everything is about you,” Clary said furiously.
“Possibly,” Jace said, “but you do have to admit that the majority of things are.”

“I have a fetish for damsels in distress.”
“Don’t be sexist.”
“Not at all. My services are also available to gentlemen in distress. It’s an equal opportunity fetish.”

“Waiting for a special occasion to kill me? Christmas is coming.”

Book Reveal: In the Shadows - Kiersten White and Jim Di Bartolo

A new and exciting collaboration between Kiersten White and Jim Di Bartolo will be released 29 April 2014! Introducing: IN THE SHADOWS!

Goodreads: Add it to your reading list

This book reveal definitely took me by surprise! And I have to say, I am super excited about this somewhat mysterious, but I am sure utterly amazing and unique YA book.

Kiersten White is one of my favourite authors, she has written great books such as Paranormalcy, Supernaturally, Endlessly, The Chaos of Stars and Mind Games - but this book has something extra special: Jim Di Bartolo! Jim is an incredibly gifted artist, and I cannot wait to see more of his amazing work in printed format. I was introduced to Jim’s art due to Laini Taylor’s books, but I am not being biased when I say I love his work - Jim certainly holds his own when it comes to the talent department! You may already know how fantastic Jim is, as he was responsible for the utterly beautiful illustrations in Lips Touch, Blackbringer and Silksinger (amongst his other great work).

Combining Jim’s art and Kiersten’s writing can be nothing short of spectacular! Some of the details of this upcoming release are somewhat a mystery: there is no synopsis on Goodreads, and both Kiersten and Jim have kept their cards close to their chest on this one. From what I can tell, this will be a truly unique book - it is not a graphic novel, or a novel with illustrations - the illustrations tell as much of the story as the written text… and that is something that truly excites me! But what we know so far: The artwork has been done by Jim (eek), the writing is by Kiersten (fangirlling), the editor is David Levithan (wow!) and it will be in full colour (ohmygod). Kiersten has described it as “this book is unlike anything else on the YA shelves right now”.

I cannot wait for this book! I know I shouldn’t wish my life away, but considering April will bring me Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor, a trip to Prague and now IN THE SHADOWS, I wish it was April 2014 already!

More information about this exciting book can be found at Kiersten White’s blog, Jim Di Barolo’s blog and the Publishers Weekly website.

Eeeeeekkkkk!!!!!!

Blogging 101: Speed reading tips

Hey readers! Today I want to talk a bit about learning how to speed read - or at least to be able to read faster than you do already. I am currently in the process of learning this myself, since I am not the fastest reader, but there’s some really practical good tips that I have picked up recently and I think these would be helpful to anyone who loves reading - especially if you have a lot on your TBR piles!

Stop Reading To Yourself

When we read, we sub vocalise the words, or hear each of the words in our head. We don’t actually need to do this to be able to comprehend the words we’re reading, and really - this actually slows us down considerably. One tip that I’ve found is that if you repeat the numbers 1,2,3,4 in your head, or hum to yourself as you’re reading you’ll still be able to read and comprehend what’s going on in your book, but you’ll then be able to just focus on doing it much faster since you’re not pronouncing all the words in your mind as you read along. If you’re the type of reader who moves your lips as you read along, you’re sub vocalising in another way, and to help, cover your mouth as you read. It might sound silly but it works!

Use a Marker

Sometimes when we’re reading, I know at least I do this - I go back and re-read sentences to make sure I have understood them correctly. We don’t actually need to do this, and it wastes a lot of time. Some sites recommend using your finger as a guide to set and keep a reading pace. Let your eyes stay with your finger and move over each line without stopping. You will be blown away by how much more you read in the same amount of time just by following this one. You could also use a piece of card if you find it hard using your finger as a guide and move the card along the page as you read. Don’t allow yourself to go back, just keep plowing through.

Time Yourself

I definitely recommend you time how fast you read before you start doing any of this. There are sites online that will time how fast you read at the moment, as well as test you on how much you comprehended at the same time. And then most importantly, speed reading is about practice. So make sure you are in a quiet room where you are able to focus. Make sure you’re in the mood to read as well and that you’re not going to have distractions. And just practice the two above tips. I guarantee they do work, they have been working for me at least, but they do take a lot of time and patience, and I am definitely a work in progress personally. I would recommend re-timing/testing yourself every now and then to see how you’re improving too.

This is a huge benefit if you’re able to make better use of your time, by being more productive and reading faster. We all know reading can be time consuming, and with so many books on our lists to read, I know I am always looking at ways I can make the most of my time. There’s plenty more tips out there too guys! I have just given you three today. I’d be happy to share more if you’re interested - but if you jump on Google like I did, that’s where I picked up most of these tips, and they’re really easy to just get started too!!

Does anyone out there use these techniques already? Are you finding they help you read faster? Or are you like me, a little slow at reading and wanting to improve your reading speed?

If you have any questions or ideas for topics we can discuss next week leave them in the comments below and Kristy or I will make sure we answer them for you - possibly in a new post next week!

Stacking the Shelves #59

Evening everyone! I hope you were all spoilt for books this week!!! Kristy and I had a good week once again - but technically this is two weeks worth since Kristy got 1 book last week and I had nothing, so I thought it best to save up our post for now!

Stacking the Shelves is bought to you by Tynga from Tynga’s Reviews. Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

In Mel’s mailbox this week:

Allegiant (Divergent #3) - Veronica Roth

I pre ordered this from The Book Depository and it arrived this week!! :D

One choice will define you.

What if your whole world was a lie?
What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?
What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Horizon (The Soul Seekers #4) - Alyson Noel

Thank you so much to Pan MacMillan Australia for this copy. I haven’t read any of the books in this series unfortunately so it’ll be on my TBR pile once I can read the others!

Fate has bound them together—and torn them apart. Now Daire and Dace face one final fight that will seal their destiny forever.

Daire Santos is the last of the Soul Seekers, and the only thing standing between the Richters and the destruction of everyone she loves. With her grandmother gone and Cade back in Enchantment, Daire must finally step into her destiny and lead the fight against the Richters. But what if that means sacrificing the person she loves most?

Bound to the Richters by blood, Dace struggles against the darkness growing inside him that threatens to claim Daire too. Though Daire refuses to give up on him, the choice may not be hers. An epic battle is on the horizon and the end of the world looms near. With such insurmountable odds stacked against them, is their love really enough to conquer all?

In both Mel & Kristy’s mailbox this week:

The Trap (The Hunt #3) - Andrew Fukuda

Thank you to Simon & Schuster Australia for this copy. This is meant to be a great series, but again I haven’t read any of the books in this series although I do want to.

The thrilling finale to Fukuda’s vampire trilogy.

After barely escaping the Mission alive, Gene and Sissy face an impossible task: staying alive long enough to stop an entire world bent on their destruction. Bound on a train heading into the unknown with the surviving Mission girls, Gene, Sissy, David, and Epap must stick together and use everything they have to protect each other and their only hope: the cure that will turn the blood-thirsty creatures around them into humans again. Now that they know how to reverse the virus, Gene and Sissy have one final chance to save those they love and create a better life for themselves. But as they struggle to get there, Gene’s mission sets him on a crash course with Ashley June, his first love . . . and his deadliest enemy.

Red Hill - Jamie McGuire

Thank you to Simon & Schuster Australia for this book. We haven’t read any Jamie McGuire books, but we are looking forward to reading Red Hill.

When the world ends, can love survive?

For Scarlet, raising her two daughters alone makes fighting for tomorrow an everyday battle. Nathan has a wife, but can’t remember what it’s like to be in love; only his young daughter Zoe makes coming home worthwhile. Miranda’s biggest concern is whether her new VW Bug is big enough to carry her sister and their boyfriends on a weekend escape from college finals.

When reports of a widespread, deadly “outbreak” begin to surface, these ordinary people face extraordinary circumstances and suddenly their fates are intertwined. Recognizing they can’t outrun the danger, Scarlet, Nathan, and Miranda desperately seek shelter at the same secluded ranch, Red Hill. Emotions run high while old and new relationships are tested in the face of a terrifying enemy—an enemy who no longer remembers what it’s like to be human.

Set against the backdrop of a brilliantly realized apocalyptic world, love somehow finds a way to survive. But what happens when the one you’d die for becomes the one who could destroy you?

In Kristy’s mailbox this week:

Angelfall (Penryn & The End of Days #1) - Susan Ee

I have been planning on getting this one for a while, and I finally ordered it.

It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where she’ll risk everything to rescue her sister and he’ll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds #1) - Alexandra Bracken

I re-purchased this one as I got rid of my copy when I heard that the Australian editions were getting a new cover (to match the sequel). However, that cover is only coming out in ebook :(

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a government ′rehabilitation camp′. Ruby might have survived the mysterious disease that killed most of America′s children, but she and the others had emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now on the run, she is desperate to find East River, the only safe haven left for kids like her, and she joins a group of other runaways who have escaped their own camps. Liam, their brave leader, is falling for Ruby, but she can′t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all Liam. But there are also other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government.

Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice - and one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living.

The Naturals - Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Thank you to Pan Macmillan Australia for this proof copy. I really like Jennifer Lynn Barnes, so I am really looking forward to this one.

Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.

Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

The Killing Woods - Lucy Christopher

I received this thanks to Scholastic. I haven’t read any Lucy Christopher books yet, and I think this will be a good one to start with.

Emily’s dad is accused of murdering a teenage girl. Emily is sure he is innocent, but what happened that night in the woods behind their house where she used to play as a child? Determined to find out, she seeks out Damon Hillary the enigmatic boyfriend of the murdered girl. He also knows these woods. Maybe they could help each other. But he’s got secrets of his own about games that are played in the dark.

Forevermore - Cindy Miles

I also received this from Scholastic. I am rather interested in this one, due to the fact it is set in Scottish castle.

On a misty cliffside, mystery and romance await. . . .

Ivy Calhoun’s life has been turned upside down. Her new stepdad has uprooted Ivy and her mom, bringing them to live in an actual castle in the misty Scottish countryside. There are stone-faced servants and shadowy corridors, and the ancient walls seem full of secrets. Ivy is at once frightened and intrigued.

Especially when she meets Logan, a gorgeous, elusive ghost who has haunted the castle grounds for decades. Ivy is immediately drawn to him . . . but Logan is not the only spirit around. Something dark and deadly is afoot, and soon Ivy finds herself in mortal danger.

Is Logan exactly what he seems? Could his mysterious past be tied to Ivy’s present? And can Ivy stop herself from falling in love with him?

Tape - Steven Camden

I got this ARC from HarperCollins Australia. It doesn’t hit shelves until February 2014, but I can’t wait to read this one (and it has an awesome cover - I hope the final copies have the same cover)

Record a voice and it lasts forever…

In 1993, Ryan records a diary on an old tape. He talks about his mother’s death, about his dreams, about his love for a new girl at school who doesn’t even know he exists.

In 2013, Ameliah moves in with her grandmother after her parents die. There, she finds a tape in the spare room. A tape with a boy’s voice on it – a voice she can’t quite hear, but which seems to be speaking to her.

Ryan and Ameliah are connected by more than just a tape.

This is their story

Curtsies & Conspiracies (Finishing School #2) – Gail Carriger

Does one need four fully grown foxgloves for decorating a dinner table for six guests? Or is it six foxgloves to kill four fully grown guests?

Sophronia’s first year at Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality has certainly been rousing! For one thing, finishing school is training her to be a spy (won’t Mumsy be surprised?). Furthermore, Sophronia got mixed up in an intrigue over a stolen device and had a cheese pie thrown at her in a most horrid display of poor manners.

Now, as she sneaks around the dirigible school, eavesdropping on the teachers’ quarters and making clandestine climbs to the ship’s boiler room, she learns that there may be more to a school trip to London than is apparent at first. A conspiracy is afoot-one with dire implications for both supernaturals and humans. Sophronia must rely on her training to discover who is behind the dangerous plot-and survive the London Season with a full dance card.

In this sequel to bestselling author Gail Carriger’s YA debut Etiquette & Espionage, class is back in session with more petticoats and poison, tea trays and treason. Gail’s distinctive voice, signature humor, and lush steampunk setting are sure to be the height of fashion this season.

Cold Spell (Fairytale Retellings #4) – Jackson Pearce

Kai and Ginny grew up together–best friends since they could toddle around their building’s rooftop rose garden. Now they’re seventeen, and their relationship has developed into something sweeter, complete with stolen kisses and plans to someday run away together.

But one night, Kai disappears with a mysterious stranger named Mora–a beautiful girl with a dark past and a heart of ice. Refusing to be cast aside, Ginny goes after them and is thrust into a world she never imagined, one filled with monsters and thieves and the idea that love is not enough.

If Ginny and Kai survive the journey, will she still be the girl he loved–and moreover, will she still be the girl who loved him?

November 7th

After Eden (After Eden #1) – Helen Douglas

Eden Anfield loves puzzles, so when mysterious new boy Ryan Westland shows up at her school she’s hooked. On the face of it, he’s a typical American teenager. So why doesn’t he recognise pizza? And how come he hasn’t heard of Hitler? What puzzles Eden the most, however, is the interest he’s taking in her.

As Eden starts to fall in love with Ryan, she begins to unravel his secret. Her breakthrough comes one rainy afternoon when she stumbles across a book in Ryan’s bedroom - a biography of her best friend - written over fifty years in the future. Confronting Ryan, she discovers that he is there with one unbelievably important purpose … and she might just have destroyed his only chance of success.

November 12th

Ketchup Clouds – Annabel Pitcher

Dear Mr. S. Harris,

Ignore the blob of red in the top left corner. It’s jam, not blood, though I don’t think I need to tell you the difference. It wasn’t your wife’s jam the police found on your shoe. . .

Zoe has an unconventional pen pal-Mr. Stuart Harris, a Texas Death Row inmate and convicted murderer. But then again, Zoe has an unconventional story to tell. A story about how she fell for two boys, betrayed one of them, and killed the other.

Hidden away in her backyard shed in the middle of the night with a jam sandwich in one hand and a pen in the other, Zoe gives a voice to her heart and her fears after months of silence. Mr. Harris may never respond to Zoe’s letters, but at least somebody will know her story-somebody who knows what it’s like to kill a person you love. Only through her unusual confession can Zoe hope to atone for her mistakes that have torn lives apart, and work to put her own life back together again.

Rising literary star Annabel Pitcher pens a captivating second novel, rich with her distinctive balance between humor and heart. Annabel explores the themes of first love, guilt, and grief, introducing a character with a witty voice and true emotional resonance.

The F- It List – Julie Halpern

With her signature heart and humor, Julie Halpern explores a strained friendship strengthened by one girl’s battle with cancer.
